Philosophy Curriculum Statement

At Heene we are committed to using Philosophy across the curriculum, with all ages and abilities, as an approach to learning and teaching which enhances children’s thinking and communication skills, boosts their self-esteem, and improves their academic attainment.

We ensure that regular Philosophy sessions enable children to develop their skills and understanding over time. During sessions, children learn to come up with engaging questions in response to a stimulus and based on a shared issue or concern, and to think and reason individually about the question before exchanging ideas and opinions as a group, or community of enquiry.

Our aim is that, as their questions grow more philosophical and imaginative, children learn the important skills of listening carefully to each other, exploring differences of opinion respectfully, and valuing the ideas of others.

Philosophy sits very closely alongside RSHE.
