Philosophy and Citizenship Curriculum Statement

Philosophy is included within the curriculum in order to develop the children's thinking skills by encouraging them to formulate good questions for enquiry. The art of questioning is central to both teaching and critical and creative thinking because reasoning is at its most powerful when we seek answers to questions that really puzzle us, often open-ended questions that contain philosophical concepts.

The children are encouraged to develop 'communities of enquiry' in which young people listen carefully to each other's experiences, feelings and perspectives, think more critically about their own ideas, and articulate them with more confidence. We want our children to be 'Global Citizens' who are aware of the wider world, and are willing to act to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place, taking responsibility for their actions.
