Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Curriculum Statement

The aim of language teaching at Heene is to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world, to enable them to learn new ways of thinking and to provide the foundation for learning further languages.  Pupils learn to communicate for practical purposes, to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

Beginning by learning sounds, words and simple sentences in French, pupils at Heene progress to using short sentences and question patterns. They are then taught to say, understand, read and write more complex sentences and questions, as a result acquiring the skills to imitate and manipulate language.

Our MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) subject leader liaises with high school language departments to ensure a smooth transition for pupils, whether they will continue with French or learn a different language.
